Arundel Festival - Shakespeare in The Collector Earl’s Garden

A Midsummer Night's Dream

"The British Shakespeare Company will set the new Collector Earl's
Garden alight with A Midsummer Night's Dream"
The Guardian

Arundel Castle, Arundel, West Sussex
Thursday 28th & Friday 29th August 2008

Following last year's sell-out tour the British Shakespeare Company is proud to present Shakespeare at Arundel Castle as part of the Arundel Festival.

The Collector Earl’s Garden at Arundel Castle in West Sussex provides a magnificent and idyllic setting for A Midsummer Night's Dream. Performed in beautiful Elizabethan costumes by a cast of 15 of Britain’s finest professional Shakespearian actors the shows will include live music and hilarious comedy all set in the stunning natural surroundings that Shakespeare intended for his plays.

A magical open-air festival of love, laughter and amorous adventure, performed by a company that continues to delight audiences and critics alike.

Arundel Castle

Set high on a hill in West Sussex, this great Castle commands the landscape with magnificent views across the South Downs and the River Arun. Built at the end of the 11th Century it has been the family home of the Dukes of Norfolk and their ancestors for over 900 years.

The Collector Earl’s Garden

The Collector Earl's Garden has been conceived as a light-hearted tribute to Thomas Howard, 14th Earl of Arundel (1585-1646), known as 'The Collector'. The grand centrepiece is the rock work 'mountain' planted with palms and rare ferns to represent another world, and supporting a green oak version of 'Oberon's Palace', a fantastic spectacle designed by Inigo Jones for Prince Henry's Masque on New Year's Day 1611 - only five years after A Midsummer Night's Dream was first presented. Inspired by Shakespeare's Dream, and designed by one of history's greatest architects and theatre designers, it will be a magnificent and idyllic setting. The garden is an evocation of a Jacobean garden, not a re-creation. In the words of its brilliant and original designers 'it aims to stand alone, to be pleasing, timeless and memorable'.
