Tucked away and just around the corner from Shakespeare’s Globe is Southwark Cathedral (properly known as the Cathedral Church of St Saviour and St Mary Overie) near London’s Tower Bridge. Inside you will find this window with characters from Shakespeare. The window was designed by Christopher Webb, and replaced the one which had been destroyed during the second world war, and was unveiled on the anniversary of Shakespeare’s death in April 1954. William’s brother Edmund is buried here - he died at the age of 27 in 1607, and William payed the 20 Shillings for him to be buried inside the cathedral, although the actual position of Edmund’s grave is unknown.

“We zealously endorse the idea of a celebration of humanities greatest poet.”
Comment page The Sunday Telegraph 21st October 2006

“John Reid has indicated that he would strongly support a Shakespeare Day to celebrate England’s greatest playwright”
The Sunday Telegraph

“As a huge fan of Burn’s Night celebrations, I think this is a really interesting idea and certainly well worth exploring. Shakespeare is one of England’s towering literary figures and anything that celebrates his life and work, and anything that help stimulate wider interest in his writings, should be encouraged.”
Tessa Jowell
