Internship Programme

British Shakespeare Company
London, England and Oslo, Norway
Dates: June 7th - June 28th, 2009

The British Shakespeare Company are delighted to be working with Acting Abroad to offer this unique educational theatre internship to young people interested in joining the profession. Please go to our education page and open the pdf for further details. You can also visit the Acting Abroad website for further details. Although at present this is being offered to American students we would be happy to talk to UK based students.

The British Shakespeare Company is looking for a producer to join the company.

This person will replace Jo Short who although she only worked with us for a short time had a great impact on the company. Among other things she designed proposals to send out across the UK and Europe that will see us expanding our work this year and into the future. She encouraged us to form producing partnerships a policy that will continue into the future. In the past we produced alone hiring sites for this purpose. She will return to her native Australia to found her own theatre and we wish her great success. She will be greatly missed.

PRODUCER: The Producer’s jobs will be diverse and as well as the normal creative work they will also include dealing with things specific to open air theatre such as organising the outside infrastructure and security. We are a creative organisation and there will be many chances to take charge of specific parts of the open air touring as well as total control of future diversity. This post may even suit a theatre director but one that must also have a genuine desire to be in management. The BSC Artistic Director also produces for, directs and manages productions.

NatashaRichardson.jpgThe Talented and glamorous Natasha Richardson died today of head injuries after a skiing accident. Richardson, was an intelligent, accomplished and versatile actress winning a Tony Award for Cabaret on Broadway, appearing in many films and performing Open Air Shakespeare in Regents Park.

As the daughter of Oscar-winning actress Vanessa Redgrave and director Tony Richardson, sister of Joely Richardson and granddaughter of Michael Redgrave she was a member of England’s acting royalty.

Sam Mendes speaks for all theatre lovers when he says she was “one of a kind, a magnificent actress.” She leaves her husband Liam Neeson and their two sons, Michael, 13, and Daniel, 12.

'Juliet's balcony' in Verona will now be available as a wedding venue.

Young couples will for the first time be allowed to tie the knot on “Juliet’s balcony” in Verona. This sounds like a wonderful and romantic thing to do.

It is interesting to read that several papers including The Independent, The Telegraph and ABC News seem to believe that Romeo and Juliet is a true story.

Although I truly believe the impact that Shakespeare’s fictional characters have had on the world far outweighs that of most historical and living people I am delighted to say the tragic love story is not true.

We would like to wish Josephine Short good luck with her performance of Hedda Gabler with her Elsewhere theatre company. She joined our company as a producer only a few month ago and brought her significant talent to developing our upcoming tour. Here are the details:

Elsewhere & Saga present Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen

“CONTROL A HUMAN DESTINY?” How far would you go? Enter the debonair world of the 1950s, where hidden desires threaten the calm, and castles in the air come crashing down. Hedda Gabler, the wife of clueless academic George Tesman, is frantically dissatisfied with her paltry circumstances broken only by visits from Aunt Julia and lecherous Judge Brack. The arrival of former schoolmate, Thea Elvsted, and old flame Eilert Lovborg re-ignites in Hedda an ultimately fatal desire for control. “I’m burning…burning your child.”
